For a cracked or broken leg, remove the damaged leg from the chair in question and take it to your local D. I. Y. store to see if you can get a matching replacement. If this is the case, then use the appropriate wood stain or varnish to match the color of the new leg to the rest of the chair. Glue the leg in place against the wood joints of the chair itself, using wood screws to hold the different pieces together. Drive the screws into the wood far enough so that you can then apply a little wood putty to hide the head of the screw. Finish off by using some more of the same wood stain or varnish to make the wood putty blend in with the rest of the chair.

For the chairs that are making tracks in your floor, or driving your neighbors up the wall if you live in an apartment, then you can try either sticking self-adhesive felt pads to the bottom of each leg where it meets the floor, or other methods such as tennis balls. The goal is to soften the impact of the chair being moved over the floor and to muffle the noise and vibration that this can cause. You can also cover the bottom of the legs of kitchen chairs with pincushions.

When the time comes to buying new kitchen chairs, you'll be able to take the noise and vibration factor into account. Many kitchen chairs are sold with a rubber tipped feet for this very reason. It's almost a given that kitchen floors will be made out of some hard material, as it is a rare thing to have any form of carpeting in the kitchen for obvious reasons. He must have eaten a lot of eggs because the crushed up shells coated the inside of his kitchen drain pipe and finally stopped it up entirely. The entire drain pipe wound up having to be replaced.

Put The Big Chunks Somewhere Else

Hopefully that story shows how important it is to be careful how you use your garbage disposal. Put bigger scraps and trimmings in either the trash or a compost pile and use the disposal for the small stuff that would otherwise get rinsed down the drain. Your drain pipes will be better for it.

Garbage Disposal Clogs

Sometimes even if you have followed all of these guidelines the garbage disposal clogs up anyway. No problem, it's pretty simple to learn how to unclog a garbage disposal. There are just a couple of basic steps to follow.

Does The Motor Need To Be Reset?

First, find out if the motor is jammed. If you flip the switch and the disposal just hums, it is most likely locked up. If the power stays on to the disposal this usually results in the motor cutting off, so lots of garbage disposals have a reset button (usually on the bottom). Turn the switch off, wait a few seconds and push the reset button.

Find For The Wrench Hole

The next step is to unjam the disposal. Most garbage disposals have an opening in the bottom that allows you to insert an "Allen Wrench" into the bottom of the shaft and manually turn the shaft to free it up. Sometimes the wrench is included with the disposal. If not a standard "Allen" wrench will get the job done.

How To Unclog A Garbage Disposal With A Wrench

Make sure the power switch is off before going to the next step! If you're not sure, or if you have an air switch, turn off the breaker serving the disposal. Turn the faucet on and stick the wrench into the bottom of the shaft. The opening for this should be in the middle of the bottom of the garbage disposal. Now turn the wrench back and forth a couple of times until you can turn the wrench all the way around freely.

The Broomstick Method

If your disposal has no hole for a wrench at the bottom you can always try using a broomstick. Take about a 2 foot long piece of broom stick, stick it in the top of the disposal and pretend you are stirring a big pot of stew while bearing down on the stick. While not nearly as effective as the wrench method, on some models it's your only choice.

I Thought I Left My Rings On The Counter

Once you've got the shaft turning, turn the switch back on. The disposal should drain now. If not, or if you weren't able to get the shaft unstuck, there may be something (hopefully not an expensive ring) causing the jam. Making sure the switch is off, look down inside the disposal. It will probably help to use a flashlight. If you can see anything inside, try to get it out with a pair of needle nose pliers.

The Last Option

If you can tell there is something inside but it won't come out with the pliers it may require removing the disposal. If the shaft won't turn at all, then the next step is learning how to unclog a garbage disposal.

Removing A Garbage Disposal

The key to removing a garbage disposal is to not get in too big a hurry. The drain connection usually attaches to the disposal with a clamp that just needs to be unfastened, so take this apart first. If the sink bowl is backed up and full of water make sure you have a bowl ready to catch the water.

Disconnect The Garbage Disposal From The Sink

Once the drain is disconnected remove the mounting assembly that connects the disposal to the sink. This will be either a big nut, a bracket held in place with screws or, on Insinkerator disposals, a clamp ring that twists down. Once you have this loose you should be able to remove the disposal from the sink, take the rubber splash shield off and peek inside.

Remove The Foreign Object And Reassemble Everything

Now you can get whatever is jamming the blades out and then, before you put everything back together, turn the switch on for a minute and make sure the blade spins now. If it spins freely now, put it all back together. Be careful and get all of the gaskets back where they go and then test everything for leaks. Try the switch a few times to make sure it works and put everything back in the cabinet.

Hello and thank you for your visit. What I have written here in part reflects some of my various thoughts and concepts about life, family, friends, God, etc. As a child growing up in a large family we had it pretty good during the warm seasons of the year, but wintertime was another story. Wintertime was cold and at times very hard; a time we couldn't wait to get through. Mom and Dad would scrap together food to feed us from what had been canned, stored or donated. They made sure we stayed warm usually by firewood gathered earlier or coal we were able to purchase. Somehow the family all pulled together and did what was needed to get by. Wintertime was also a good time. A time that we seemed to huddle a little closer together as a family and a time we appreciated things a little more. Wintertime makes me think of the beauty of falling snow, blanketing the ground; what a sight, covering the dirt and brown grass! Snow covering the earth reminds me of how Gods love covers the world and cleanses it making it a beautiful. Wintertime reminds me of the smell of wood burning or momma cooking in the kitchen; the smell of coffee filling the air or dads aftershave. I remember the feeling of waking up nearly frozen to death, how from under the covers seeing my breath vanishing before me. I remember us kids running as fast as we could to huddle around the stove in the living room while we waited for breakfast. Many of the poems or thoughts came to me as I sat alone and thoughts of family and friends came to mind. For just a brief while you can go back and relive the good times, the fun times and the sad times. I thank God that we are able to record our thoughts to remind us in the future, of the blessings of the past. Wintertime Memories is one of those poems where I allowed myself to go back and relive my childhood days once more. How to Make Delicious Nail Soup

My father was raised during the Great Depression, becoming an orphan in his pre teens. His oldest sibling took over the family to keep them all together. Scarcity of food affected his personality so strongly that he later insisted that my family live on a farm and learn how to supply our own table. For years he had a problem of over eating, until he finally convinced himself he was not going to starve.

One of the stories he brought with him combined hunger with cleverness, the tale of "Nail Soup". I later learned that the story dates back centuries in Scandinavia, Poland, and other Northern European countries. We do know that the story originated after the invention of iron tools... unless it was previously known as "stone soup" as has been suggested.

Today, some folklorists say the story teaches cooperation across skill sets. I think the simplest explanation fits best, namely, how to harness greed to the benefit of both sides.

We can tweak the tale a bit to make a guide for dietary self interest. But the story was born long before anyone knew about vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, or other nutritional concepts. Most likely our ancestors thought in terms of filling the belly, and what we now call calories. It went something like this.

One day our hero (vagabond, itinerant peddler, beggar, tramp, disbanded soldier, pilgrim, et cetera), who was footsore and very hungry, came upon a (small village, cabin in the woods, camp-ground, monastery, et cetera). The person[s] he saw there told him he/she/they were sorry but there was not a bit of food to share, times being desperate as they were. Hero said "not to worry, I'd just like to borrow a pot and some water, a spoon, a place on your fire, and I'll make nail soup." Well this did arouse a bit of curiosity, so the pot of water was provided. Hero then pulled an iron nail out of his pocket, held it close to his face, then mumbled some barely heard words. That done, he put the nail in the pot, and proceeded to wait for it to boil.

To short cut about thirty minutes of story telling, Hero satisfied questions by saying that, indeed, the soup would be a bit better if provided a pinch of salt, some wilted vegetables, an onion, a marrow bone, some left over barley, some old bread, and so forth, carefully stirring the pot and tasting the broth after each addition. Eventually Hero declared that, to show his thanks for the use of the pot, he would gladly share the soup if person[s] had bowl[s] handy. He then served out the soup, being careful to palm the nail and make it vanish back into his pocket.

Now that we do know something about nutrition, we could round out the recipe by including some potatoes, carrots, green vegetables, some lean ground beef or chunks of soy bean curd, perhaps some spices. Depending on the needs of those eating, we could allow some oil or other fats to raise the caloric content, but no sugar.

One final note: when you have eaten enough, stop.

Planning a Vegetable Garden

It is important when you start to plan a garden, to know what you want the garden to do.
For instance, if you are hoping to feed a family of four all year round, you will need to plan a garden that is approximately 100 square meters of space (not including
walking paths) that produces more than once. If you live in a cold climate, you will not be able to grow year round. So asking yourself a few basic questions is a good way to start.

Where do you Live?

Climate can be broken down into three basic categories when planning a garden. Cold, temperate and tropical/sub-tropical.
Of course there are many shades of climate in these categories and only you can determine exactly how where you live, fits into the mix.

What will grow Where?

Different plants have different requirements so take that into consideration when doing your vegetable garden planning.

Plants like beans, broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, cauliflower, turnips, onions and peas grow best at temperatures between 10-20C. These plants prefer a cooler time of the year to grow
and will usually tolerate frost.

Vegetables like cabbage, carrots, radish, parsnip, leek, lettuce and celery have intermediate temperature requirements. They will grow best in temperatures between 15-25C and they can be fussy. Grow them out of season and they may run to seed without producing anything for your
kitchen table.

Warm season vegetables grow best in temperatures above 20C and will die if exposed to frost. These include corn, capsicum, potato, tomato, eggplant and beans and all the vine crops. So
make sure the majority of their growing season is in the warmer months.

A few other considerations...

Protect your plants from harsh winds. Cold winds will stunt growth, hot winds will dry the soil and harm the plants, strong winds will make them break. If you don't have a natural sunny
protected corner in your garden, prepare a windbreak of garden lattice or slatted timber.

Make sure your vegetable garden gets plenty of sunshine...at least 5 hours a day of direct sunlight.

Make sure your taller plants don't block the sunlight for the smaller plants. Consider planting your garden rows in a north to south aspect so all rows receive equal amounts of sun during the day.

If you are planning to plant successive crops, rotate where you plant what. Different plants take different things out of the garden soil. This will also reduce the potential for a particular type of pest or disease to take hold in your garden. Keep replenishing your compost and mulch!

Water, water, water, water, water! Vegetables need water to grow and lots of it. A drip water system is best to give the plants a good, deep soaking and to discourage leaf fungus. This will encourage root growth. Do NOT let your garden bed dry out. Your no dig garden will have good drainage anyway, so keep it wet and top it up with mulch to keep the moisture in.

Vegetable plants should grow quickly to produce well. Water, sunshine and fertilizer all have a role. If your plants aren't sprinting ahead, then they are lacking something and your results will be disappointing. Find out what it is and fix it.

By following these simple vegetable gardening tips, your no dig garden will be off to a flying start. Spend some time to work out what you will grow over the growing season that you have available to you. Then back time the weeks you will need to grow your seedling before planting.

If you were to randomly ask ten people what a "hutch" is, they would almost answer universally that it is a big wooden cabinet that sits in a dining room with dishes in it. Little if any thought would be given to the possibility that it could be a big wooden cabinet that sits in a kitchen. The funny thing is that the average kitchen is full of big furniture items. The stove, refrigerator, freezer, kitchen table and in some instances even the washer and dryer are all in the kitchen. The problem is that other than the kitchen table and chairs, most people don't envision a big piece of wood furniture in a kitchen.

Utilitarian in purpose, what better place than the kitchen for a cabinet that displays dishes and glasses, holds silverware, linens, special use utensils and cooking gadgets? Wood always lends warmth to kitchen décor and nothing could be warmer than a stately wooden hutch lining a wall in a kitchen.

There are a variety of hutch styles that would complement almost any kitchen design. From modern and contemporary to traditional or even antique finishes, the possibilities are endless. Furniture is an expression of you; a signature of sorts and it should always complement rather than detract. Obviously a huge ostentatious wooden cabinet carelessly stationed in the middle of the floor would be more of an eyesore than an accent, however, a smaller well-crafted cabinet scaled to fit the room can add just the right touch to an otherwise ordinary room.

LED Home Lighting - A Buyer's Guide

Whether you are just intrigued by the new LED home lighting products appearing in many stores, or are keen to contribute in the fight against climate change (global warming) or simply want to save money on your fuel bills, the fact is that LED home lighting is the future.

So sooner rather than later, you're going to have to learn what this future means to you personally and how you can in fact benefit considerably from new low power consumption domestic LED lighting.

This article aims to dispel some of the confusion that surrounds the many lighting solutions currently available to consumers and provide a useful guide to evaluating and buying LED home lighting.

Where should you use LED lighting in your home? The nature of LED lamps is that they emit is directional light - focused on a single area. So they are a superb choice for lighting applications that have similar characteristics, such as:

spot lights
accent lighting
tracks and clusters
recessed down lights
security lighting
courtesy lights
desk lamps
decorative & feature lighting

Many homes have this kind of lighting in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and basements - anywhere that needs to be brightly lit.

LED units also function well in strips, so under kitchen units and inside cupboards are ideal - also they give off almost no heat, plus the extremely bright light is needed in a fairly confined area rather than spread widely.

What LED lights are presently less adept at is all round illumination - from say a table lamp with a lamp shade.

Key point one: keep to what LED home lighting currently does best - bright directional lighting.

Something that confuses many people about LED lights is "color". This is not color as in green and orange - it is "white color". LED lamps come in a variety of "white colors" - from soft, warm illumination to a sharper, colder effect.

As a rough guide, "warm white" LED lights work best indoors while "cool white" is a good choice for outdoor LED lighting where you typically want sharper definition and illumination that approximates daylight.

Key point two: understand the LED light "color" scale.

Next, we get to input power ratings or wattage. We are used to knowing that 100w is bright while 40w is suitable a lounge maybe and 10w is essentially a courtesy light. But home LED lighting doesn't conform to this scale for the simple reason that LED light bulbs require very low power consumption since nearly all their input power is converted to light and almost no energy is wasted as heat.

To replace a 50w halogen lamp (both MR16 and GU10 fittings are widely available for LED equivalent replacements) you would be looking at an LED spot light rated at 7w. Step up to a 12w LED and you're taking on a regular floodlight.

There is a further complication to consider. The LED "color" affects how bright it actually appears to human eyes - cool colors seem sharper and apparently brighter than warm colors. Mentally adjust the wattage equivalent up or down a fraction according to the LED color.

Key point three: LED lights are very low energy units, so get used to a much lower wattage scale.

In addition to color and wattage, the angle of the light beam from an LED lamp has a major effect on how it looks and how bright it appears.

A narrow angle of less than 40 degrees will focus all of its light onto a small area which will therefore appear very bright. A wider angle of 70 to 120 degrees will cast light over a wider area and thus more will be illuminated but less brightly.

Key point four: take into account the beam angle of any LED lamp.

What did I like about that cottage? I liked the simple casual décor which was a mixture of hand-me-downs and antiques that had been in the cottage for years. I liked the rustic feel of the paneling in the living room which had outlived its popularity.

The living room was a mixture of furniture including an antiqued open-shelf cabinet, a small rocking chair, and a heavy steel-framed couch. There was also a small, round antique ice cream table with two chairs. Colorful pillows added a nice touch to the cottage style decorating.

The kitchen had been somewhat modernized but still required hand washing dishes and getting ice cubes out of a tray! Another family member had “antiqued” the kitchen table using red paint and had also added red and white checked curtains and tablecloth to match. The table was a sturdy, square wooden table that was very durable. The kitchen also had a white wooden open -shelved cabinet which displayed collectibles and drawers which stored linens.

The bedroom had an antique dresser and chest as well as two double bunk beds. An oval braided rug completed the cottage look of the bedroom.

The secret to cottage style decorating is keeping it casual and having a feeling of friendly comfort as the goal. This feeling of comfort and relaxation was certainly evident in the “cottage by the lake.” There was no sentiment of pretense or make-believe as the cottage was “what you see is what you get.” For that reason it was a peaceful refuge from the hectic routine of life; a place to unwind, slow down and regroup until the next summer vacation.

1. How large do you need your patio to be? Is it just a small sitting area for two, or do you need the space to entertain large groups of people? As a guide, a sixty inch round table and chairs would need about fifteen feet of space. This allows for chairs to be maneuvered and also allows for access around the furniture. A lounge needs approximately ten feet of space. A patio which is fifteen feet by twenty feet or about 300 square feet is decent size.

2. Work with a design that looks well with the architecture of your home. Sometimes the simplicity of interesting geometric shapes and paving patterns look elegant. In other situations, curvilinear designs look beautiful and might blend in well with natural surroundings.

3. What about paving materials? Are you looking for an inexpensive solution? Colored concrete works nicely. I suggested this for a client on a budget and they loved it. I designed the concrete so that it was patterned with large squares for interest. Do you have your heart set on natural stone? Travertine pavers are becoming popular. They are actual stone but are cut into regular shapes for an easy, dry laid installation. Bluestone is always beautiful whether it be laid in mortar or dry laid. You can choose from irregular or regular shapes.

4. How high above the ground is your door to the house? If there is a four inch to eight inch difference, you can plan on just stepping onto the patio. However, if your doorway is higher, some creative design work must be done. Many times I will create a nice sized landing to step onto. From this, a few steps are provided down to the patio. This provides a comfortable area to step onto, rather than just a narrow step. If your door is very high, you can also add some steps off the patio. The ideas is to create a gradual transition to ground level.

5. Seat walls are a nice addition to patios. They not only provide something attractive and vertical to look at, but also additional seating and a nice place for conversation. Seat walls should be eighteen to twenty four inches high and a minimum of one foot deep. The top of the wall should be flat. For example, if the seat wall is to be made of natural stone, a bluestone cap provides a comfortable seat and also a resting place for food or drinks.

6. Think about some nice features to add to your patio. The sound of water from a natural or formal pond at the edge or nearby is both beautiful and peaceful. Perhaps a special sculpture works well in the design. If your patio is in a hot and sunny area, consider a pergola or trellis for shade.
You might even include a simple bird bath fountain.

Considering all of these design elements will lead to a patio project that is aesthetic, functional and enjoyable.

Summertime on the Farm and Memories of My Grandmother's Kitchen

Oh how I wish I would have experienced "summertime on the farm!" My grandmother grew up on a 42-acre orchard farm in Bucks County, Pennsylvania complete with chickens, cows and pigs. As young children my mother and aunt would spend a few weeks there during the summer in the care of my great grandmother. This took place in the early 1940s. With the antics of six uncles the little girls were kept squealing! The boys were great at teasing and game playing. Of course the two little girls loved every minute of it! The stories I have heard over the years makes me long to go back in time. Taking a walk in the woods, picking berries out in the fields and sitting at my great grandmother's dinner table are grand images to me of "living life the old fashioned way." There was a bounty of farm fresh foods served at every meal. What I wouldn't do to taste my great grandmother's country cooking with her roasted chicken made in the old coal/wood stove or her homemade bread spread with her own churned butter and fresh raspberry jam.

For my summertime memories fast forward to the late 1960s when I was about ten. My grandmother, Elizabeth, would have us over every Wednesday for the day. We'd get there in the morning for breakfast (usually had "big pancakes" otherwise known as crepes) then we'd have a simple lunch in the afternoon. Being located in the suburbs of Philadelphia her home was not a farm but it defined itself with its warmth, mouth watering aromas wafting out of her kitchen, antique dishes and wares proudly displayed and its beautifully lush gardens. The front porch was draped with a huge wisteria vine which originated from the farm. The "roots" of our family are present here. When you entered her home it almost felt as if it wrapped itself around you with its love and comfort. That is why I cherish every memory I have of those days.

There was a second floor porch out back just off the kitchen which was surrounded by a wrought iron fence covered in grapevines. Between lunch and dinner I'd go out there and take a nap on the old white wicker cushioned sofa. It was a time for me to dream and to just enjoy being a kid with no worries. How heavenly and peaceful those naps were! As I'd drift off I'd hear my grandmother and mother chatting in the kitchen while preparing dinner. I'd wake up to the wonderful aromas of comfort foods such as pot roast or fried chicken baking in the oven and mouth watering side dishes being cooked on the stove. And of course there was always dessert! How lucky I am to have been nurtured so by my family! And how lucky to have tasted such scrumptious treats which came out of my grandmother's kitchen!

Below are two of my grandmother's simple summertime recipes which bring back memories of those days. Please try them and let me know what you think!

String Bean Salad

Prepare one pound of fresh green beans by cutting off the ends and cutting in half lengthwise. Cook in salted water (about 1/2 teaspoon salt) until done but not too soft. (About 8-10 minutes) Drain and put in a bowl. Add one tablespoon sugar, sprinkle of pepper, 1/4 cup olive oil and 1/4 cup vinegar. Finely chop one tablespoon onion, one tablespoon fresh parsley and one garlic clove. Toss all ingredients together lightly until mixed well. Serve hot or cold. This recipe is seasoned to taste.

Corn and Apple Fritters

Cut the kernels off of three ears of fresh corn. You can use frozen, but fresh is better. Sift 3/4 cup flour with 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon salt and a pinch of paprika. Add 1 egg yolk and 1/4 cup milk. Mix well. Add the corn kernels. Beat the egg white until stiff. Fold into the corn mixture. Drop carefully by tablespoon into hot oil on a medium heat. They should look flat and round about the size of a silver dollar pancake. Fry on each side until golden brown. Drain on a paper towel. These are delicious drizzled with honey!

You can use this same recipe and use 1 cup shredded apples instead of the corn. Apple fritters are yummy and are best when sprinkled with powdered sugar!

A Chinese Wedding in Malaysia, Mr. Ong Kok Lam Weds Miss Goh Huey Ching

Last weekend I had the pleasure to be invited to a real Chinese wedding. Since I never had attended a Chinese wedding in Malaysia (I did attend one in China) it was an excellent opportunity to experience how Chinese people in Malaysia celebrate such an event. How I got involved in this wedding you will read on this page.

Some time ago I wrote about my friend David's son Suresh his wedding. They are Indian so it was a typical Indian wedding.

David introduced me to Mr. Ong Ah Hee, a citizin of Kuala Kurau. As the name suggest, Mr. Ong Ah Hee is Chinese. He invited me to attend wedding of his second son, Mr. Ong Kok Lam, with Miss Goh Huey Ching, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Goh Eng Hock.

The day I met Mr. Ong Ah Hee, he invited David and me for a small party to meet his son and coming daughter in law. At this party, Mr. Ong Ah Hee told me I could make as many pictures as I wanted. David would do some filming for the the family.

While we spoke, Mr. Ong Kok Lam told me they would have a small party on Friday to celebrate his last day as a bachelor. And Miss Goh Huey Ching invited David and me to witness the whole Chinese wedding ritual and plus the bride's dinner the Saturday.

Friday

David and I arrived at Mr. and Mrs. Ong Ah Hee's house in Kuala Kurau at Friday evening the 25th. A big tent was already set up outside the house in the garden. It was indeed a small informal party with snacks and beer.

Saturday

The Saturday activities started around 6pm. This was the day of the bride's wedding dinner. The Saturday dinner was for the bride's site only. From the groom's site only he and some friends but no blood relatives were invited. According to customs, not even Mr. and Mrs. Ong Ah Hee, the grooms parents, were allowed to join.

The dinner took place in a restaurant in Bukit Mertajam. Interestingly, this wedding dinner was not the only one in this restaurant. Upstairs another Chinese wedding dinner was held.

We arrived in Bukit Mertajam around 7.30pm. The dinner was supposed to start around 8pm. The dinner would consist 9 different dishes according to Chinese customs for traditional Chinese weddings. The whole dinner would take about 2 to 3 hours but the groom would not be around the whole dinner. Again, Chinese customs didn't allow him to stay the full dinner. In general after about 5 dishes, he should go back to his own house. Cutting the cake at the Chinese weddingDuring the dinner, a karaoke was available. If nobody of the guests would like to sing, the singing would be performed by a man or a woman special hired for this job.

After 5 dishes we left the restaurant and drove back to Kuala Kurau. Here a specific ceremony had to be performed. The groom, Mr. Ong Kok Lam, had to be dressed in pajamas for the ceremony.

It is important to mention people in Kuala Kurau are mostly Taoist, so parts of the ceremony probably will not be performed in other Chinese weddings in either Malaysia or other areas in the world where Chinese live.

The parents of Mr. Ong Kok Lam brought the groom in the living room. He was dressed in pajamas. In front of the house altar a small ceremony took place. Mr. Ong Kok Lam offered tea to his parents and prayed to the gods and ancestors for good luck and prosperity. The ceremony also has to confirm the ties with the family. Although the new couple would live in the house of the grooms parents, it was important to confirm the family ties.

After the ceremony David and I were asked to drive to the brides house. In fact, it was the grandmothers house. Miss Goh Huey Ching's parents had dressed dressed her in pajamas as if she was dressed for bed. The same ceremony would take place as in the grooms house.Praying in pajamas.

Sunday

Sunday was the most important day. It started in the morning with collecting the bride at her grandmothers house. It was a long procession of cars coming from Kuala Kurau. Mr. Ong Kok Lam was understandably very anxious to see his bride.

We arrived at grandmothers house with horns honking. The brides family was already busy with setting up tables outside for the guests. David and I expected to pick up the bride easily but that was not the case.

It was part of the tradition that the friends and sisters would not easily give up the bride. It was an old game that had to be played otherwise the marriage would not be blessed. So the girls had barricade the door to the room where the bride was waiting. The groom had to perform quite a few tasks before the girls were convinced he was worth to wed his bride.

This part of the tradition is quite hilarious. Mr. Ong Kok Lam, supported by his friends tried to convince the girls that he was the best choice for the bride. The girls however were not convinced and wanted to him to prove that. They gave him some plastic underwear. He had to find some people to wear that. (How that looked like, you can see here)

Then he had to find some people to lick some lollypops. Finally the girls asked for some money, RM 10.000! When the groom gave them a note of 5000 Indonesian roepias (about 10 cents) the girls send him away. Their friend who not go so cheap! Mr. Ong Kok Lam's friends even tried to get in the room with the bride by force but the girls were stronger.

And so the groom left, part of the game, but soon to return. Apparently the girls had changed their mind and now the bride could come out under loud cheerings of all people available. Together they had to perform some ceremonies. This ceremony was to confirm the ties with family and pay respect to the gods and ancestors.

Tea was served to the parents and the oldest living closest relative and after that, many other relatives followed the same procedure.

Finally we left the grandmothers house and drove back to Kuala Kurau. On arrival, the couple first visited the local Taoist temple for more prayers for good luck and prosperity.

Inside the grooms parents house the exact same procedure as in the brides' house took place. First the parents were served tea in front of the home altar, then in following the oldest closest living relative and others.

Since Mr. Ong Kok Lam is the 4th generation in his family, there were quite some relatives around and it took some time before everybody had his or her turn.

Meanwhile, outside in the tent, some food was served. While some of the family members performed the necessary rituals, others had their lunch.

It took some time but finally around 3 pm, it was time to get some rest and I went in the kitchen (in the tent there was nothing left) to eat something. Then the groom's sister came out. She told me there was upstairs another ceremony going on.

David and I went upstairs to the bedroom. the new wed couple sat on the bed with in front of them a pot closed of with red paper. Written on the paper was the Chinese double luck character written. A little child now had to break into the pot to find some money. This too had to do with luck and prosperity.

But then it would be time to rest. We all left the bedroom to eat something. A few minutes later, the bride came in the kitchen in a simple dress. She too was hungry. A minute later the groom joined.

David and I left the house and went back to his house only to come back at around 7.30 pm.

The Wedding Dinner

Mr. Ong Ah Hee, the grooms father, is the third generation living in Kuala Kurau. His grandfather build up a small emporium in the area. The grandfather came in the 1950's to Kuala Kurau from mainland China with literally no more then the clothes he was wearing. From scratch he build a family, houses and property, lend people money and became wealthy.

Although Mr. Ong Ah Hee has it's own business, he and his family (the grandfather died years ago), own a substantial part of Kuala Kurau. Therefore Mr. KOng Ah Hee knows many people.

When a Chinese marries, it's not only the grooms friends and family who will attend. Most of the guest therefore will be the parents friends. And as explained, Mr. Ong Ah Hee has many friends.

A Chinese wedding is usually calculated in tables. Mr. Ong Ah Hee expected to fill 160 tables. The Chinese always eat on round tables, sharing the food served. A table at a wedding dinner is usually shared by 8-10 people. So, by having 160 tables available, more then 1000 people were expected. Later we found out, 160 tables were not enough. There were another 16 tables added so there were probably around 1300-1400 guests.

The wedding dinner of this Chinese wedding therefore had to be held in a sports hall. David, his wife and a few of his children and me arrived around 7.30pm. Mr. Ong Ah Hee and his wife, the new wed couple and Mr. Ong Ah Hee's younger daughter were welcoming guests. All of the guests brought a wedding present. According to Chinese customs it has to be a small red envelop containing some money. How much money depend on the position of the person who gives. Close relatives and close friends give more then those who are at more distance.

David started filming and I started to do more photographing. I entered the hall. It was completely filled with tables and many were already occupied. Beer and soft drinks were served. In front of me there was a huge stage with a big sound system that would suite any rock and roll band. This was for the karaoke.

In front of the stage was the table for the new couple and the parents of both sides. Indeed, now both families were allowed to join the dinner, contrary to a day earlier when the grooms family had to stay home when the bride gave the dinner party.

Around 8pm the couple entered the hall under loud cheering of the people. When the couple and both parents sat down, the dinner started. The dinner, like the one a day earlier, consisted of 9 different and excellent dishes containing stingray, chicken, soup, vegetables etc. In fact it would take a full additional page to tell something about wedding dinner dishes since this too is full tradition too.

During the dinner, some more ceremonies had to take place. It was an extension of the ceremony that had taken place earlier the day for some relatives who had not been in the house. Tea was offered to tie the family relations.

The massive sound system was immediately occupied by guests who took the opportunity to sing some songs for the new couple. By now some Malay guest had entered. The main guest was the major of the district of Kuala Kurau: YB Mohd Salleh Bin Mat Desa PPT. He gave the new wed couple at this Chinese wedding the pleasure of singing a few Chinese songs. This is quite extraordinary.

But these high guests were not the only Malays. Some more had attended. For them special hallal food was prepared. Although most guests were Chinese, there were quite some Indians too.

After some dishes it was time to bring a toast. The couple plus both parents went on stage to bring a toast. The toast, in Chinese called Yam Sing, had to be done a few times. Then the couple and Mr. Ong Ah Hee went along some tables to toast with the people at that table. Obviously there were far too many tables so the couple and the father divided the tables as much as possible.

Yam sing is quite a dangerous thing for groom, bride and father since many people at the tables try to force them to finish their beer completely before going to the next table. One can imagine how drunk groom, bride and father could have been if there had been less tables. Now the guests understood they couldn't force them to finish since there were too many people to toast with.

Around 10.30 pm it was all over. The last 9th dish was a warm bowl of sweet juice with sweets in. Then the quests started to leave. The couple plus parents were at the exit, greeting them. This Chinese wedding now was over. It took awhile before everybody had left.

Mr. Ong Ah Hee thanked David and me for our little work with filming and photographing by giving us a small but very nice present. We went with the family to the house, which was just a short walk away. A small after party took place here but soon people left, too full and satisfied with the excellent dinner. It was time for David, his family and me to bid a goodbye to the bride, groom (both already changed in more comfortable clothes now) and the parents. It was a great few days.

Kitchen Garden Composting Tips

The first thing you should do is find a shady spot in your yard. The area you choose should have soil that drains well where you can place a composting bin. You can make a bin or buy one. There are many commercial composters on the market. This will make it easier to get started by cutting back on construction time. Once you have picked your spot and have your bin in place you may begin the layering.

First add a 6-inch layer of dry (brown) organic matter, such as hay, old leaves, sawdust or straw to the bottom of the container. Next comes a 2 - 3 inch layer of fresh (green) organic matter: such as table scraps, manure, grass clippings, or even high nitrogen fertilizer like cottonseed meal, on top of the dry matter. Keep layering in this way while watering after each layer. Do this until you have reached 4 - 5 feet tall and have filled the container. Any smaller and it won't heat up the pile. Any larger and it could be difficult to manage.

In two days you should mix the layers thoroughly. Using a pitchfork will make this easier. Particle size should be varied. Cover the pile with a tarp to keep rain away and to keep the pile moist in dry weather. If the pile gets too wet or too dry it won't heat up properly. The pile will cook within a week. Now you need to keep it cooking. A hot pile is a happy pile. Keep your pile moist by watering periodically. Dig into the pile about 1 foot to see if it is moist. If not water thoroughly but as not to make it soggy.

Turn the pile when it cools down. Use your garden fork to remove the outside layers and put them aside. Remove the inside layers into a separate pile and switch. Place the outside layers in the center of the new pile and place the inside layers along the outside of the new pile. Loosen any matted clumps. Let it cook again and when it cools repeat the process.

Make sure your pieces of material that you are adding are not too big. This will slow down the decomposition and possibly halt it all together. Shredding leaves helps to feed the compost faster. When your compost is dark in color, crumbly and smells earthy without a strong ammonia or sour smell, it is ready to enter into the garden.

A coffee table is a very important piece in the living room. It is the focal point, the center of interaction, around which all social communication takes place.

Generally positioned in the middle of the living room, the coffee table is almost a playing field, across which words, ideas, and emotions can be expressed. It stands as the surface of the room, the second layer across which everything occurs.

However there are a number of mistakes that people make when choosing this table. The most common is a size, or shape issue. Kitchen

Although there are other space saving for the kitchen to brag about, one of the top space saving items you could get for your kitchen is an under-the-cabinet trash can. Why? Well, because there's really no need for a trash can to sit out in the open looking awkward and ugly while it takes up unnecessary space. What's the point in that when you can have it stashed away beneath a cabinet or even hidden away in a closet (unseen)?

And not only are they handy because they are concealed, you'll find that many under-the-cabinet trash cans will actually save you money. Lingerie chests are narrow and tall, which makes it easy to place them just about anywhere in your bedroom. And they are even convenient if you find you don't have enough room store one in your bedroom but can make room for one in your closet.

Living Room

Although I consider small coffee tables a top choice, what's great for each living room is also an individual experience. Occasionally one home owner may find that a larger coffee table looks best while another finds the opposite to be true. So, if a small one would serve you well... one of my favorite choices is the small scale version of your basic coffee table.

Small scales version typically range around these sizes: square and round coffee tables will generally range around 30" W x 30" L or in diameter. Anything larger than that may not be considered small. Rectangular and oval coffee tables will typically range around 30-40" L and 18-21" W.

Bathroom

The bathroom is a lot like the kitchen... items can run amuck. So, one of my favorite bathroom space savers and organizers are wall-mounted cabinets. Not only do they help you keep your items from wandering all over the place and getting in the way, but they also free up floor space so it's almost like not having anything there at all. And an additional benefit is that often you can place something on top, like a beautiful silk flower, to aid to the decor and charm of your small bathroom.
