Folding Tables For the Patio

If you thought that folding tables are used only in functions and outdoor events, then you are wrong. Nowadays, folding tables and chairs are a common part of outdoor furniture for the patio. It is the ease of usage which makes them ideal for outdoor furniture use. You can fold it easily when you are not using them and that will free up your patio space. They are light weight, portable and easy to store as well. A few years ago, only a few designs were available in folding tables and chairs. These chairs have a cast iron body which is powder coated for comfort. These are extremely simple looking and people are skeptical about buying them because they do not match with other quality wooden furniture. However, now there are extremely aesthetic designs in folding tables as well. You can choose from tables made of wood, metal or plastic and easily find one that matches the outdoor decor.

Types of tables

The folding picnic table that you choose can be round, oval, octagon, rectangular or even custom shaped according to your needs and requirements. The round wooden table design which has a Texan western feel to it has legs that pivot in and out on a hinge. This enables both sides of the table to fall down so that you can tuck it away when you do not wish to use it. It even has provisions to accommodate an umbrella in the center. Another extremely popular folding picnic table is the one made of a synthetic resin. It resembles metal in many ways and can almost pass off for cast metal. It is easy to store, is scratch proof and rust proof as well. This makes it extremely easy to clean and carry. The folding mechanism may vary from one model to the other. Some folding tables are also made of white granite mold which is extremely pleasing to the eye. However, these can be heavier than some of the other models.

Choosing a folding table

While choosing a folding table, ensure that you keep an eye on the construction of the folding table legs and the hinges. These will be subject to extreme wear and tear and only quality materials and construction can withstand long term use. The legs of a quality folding table will be attached right through the body of the table with bolts rather than screws. Legs that are screwed will eventually detach with time. The ideal top for any folding table is high resistance polyurethane. But you can opt for wood or other materials as well as long as they do not have a seaming edge. The safety lock is another important component of the folding table. The automatic locking mechanism is a better option than the manual one. Lastly, some manufacturers offer a warranty on lifetime folding tables while others only offer a warranty of a year or two at the most. When you have a longer warranty period, you can be rest assured about the quality of the product.

Online stores

Buying folding tables and chairs at an online store is a much better option than at an off-line one. Unlike off-line stores, an online dealer will bring together the best of several manufacturers. So you will have much more items to choose from and you can easily compare amongst different models and their features. Also the prices for folding tables are generally lower in online stores as compared to the off-line world. So if you do the right amount of research, not only can you find a table and chair set that matches the rest of the furniture, you can find it at a great price too.

Hello and thank you for your visit. What I have written here in part reflects some of my various thoughts and concepts about life, family, friends, God, etc. As a child growing up in a large family we had it pretty good during the warm seasons of the year, but wintertime was another story. Wintertime was cold and at times very hard; a time we couldn't wait to get through. Mom and Dad would scrap together food to feed us from what had been canned, stored or donated. They made sure we stayed warm usually by firewood gathered earlier or coal we were able to purchase. Somehow the family all pulled together and did what was needed to get by. Wintertime was also a good time. A time that we seemed to huddle a little closer together as a family and a time we appreciated things a little more. Wintertime makes me think of the beauty of falling snow, blanketing the ground; what a sight, covering the dirt and brown grass! Snow covering the earth reminds me of how Gods love covers the world and cleanses it making it a beautiful. Wintertime reminds me of the smell of wood burning or momma cooking in the kitchen; the smell of coffee filling the air or dads aftershave. I remember the feeling of waking up nearly frozen to death, how from under the covers seeing my breath vanishing before me. I remember us kids running as fast as we could to huddle around the stove in the living room while we waited for breakfast. Many of the poems or thoughts came to me as I sat alone and thoughts of family and friends came to mind. For just a brief while you can go back and relive the good times, the fun times and the sad times. I thank God that we are able to record our thoughts to remind us in the future, of the blessings of the past. Wintertime Memories is one of those poems where I allowed myself to go back and relive my childhood days once more. I do hope you enjoy, Loyd Taylor Wintertime Memories Snowflakes a-fallin, in the kitchen Moms callin; You youngens get out of that bed! The days now a-wastin, the biscuits a-bakin And I got lots to do ere yere fed. Son, help your brother straighten up those covers You never know wholl drop by today; Go wash up with the others, gather round the table, Hold hands, and now let us pray: Lord, for the nights rest were grateful For this food and our great big family; Now bless whats before us, In the name of Jesus, Alright, now yall can eat. When yall are through eatin The chickens need feedin And theres firewood that needs bringin in. Now go feed your dog, Give the scraps to the hogs And bring back an arm load of kindlin. Its seems just yesterday we sat at that table Mom and Dad and the whole family; I never knew then Just how precious to me Would those Wintertime memories be. No, we never were rich in material things And at times we barely got by; But we had love to spare for all of us there And for any stranger that dropped by. They say you can't go back to the days gone by, I'm sorry, but I must disagree For I often do return and again live In those days of Wintertime Memories. Written by Loyd Taylor, December,2004

My father was raised during the Great Depression, becoming an orphan in his pre teens. His oldest sibling took over the family to keep them all together. Scarcity of food affected his personality so strongly that he later insisted that my family live on a farm and learn how to supply our own table. For years he had a problem of over eating, until he finally convinced himself he was not going to starve.

One of the stories he brought with him combined hunger with cleverness, the tale of "Nail Soup". I later learned that the story dates back centuries in Scandinavia, Poland, and other Northern European countries. We do know that the story originated after the invention of iron tools... unless it was previously known as "stone soup" as has been suggested.

Today, some folklorists say the story teaches cooperation across skill sets. I think the simplest explanation fits best, namely, how to harness greed to the benefit of both sides.

We can tweak the tale a bit to make a guide for dietary self interest. But the story was born long before anyone knew about vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, or other nutritional concepts. Most likely our ancestors thought in terms of filling the belly, and what we now call calories. It went something like this.

One day our hero (vagabond, itinerant peddler, beggar, tramp, disbanded soldier, pilgrim, et cetera), who was footsore and very hungry, came upon a (small village, cabin in the woods, camp-ground, monastery, et cetera). The person[s] he saw there told him he/she/they were sorry but there was not a bit of food to share, times being desperate as they were. Hero said "not to worry, I'd just like to borrow a pot and some water, a spoon, a place on your fire, and I'll make nail soup." Well this did arouse a bit of curiosity, so the pot of water was provided. Hero then pulled an iron nail out of his pocket, held it close to his face, then mumbled some barely heard words. That done, he put the nail in the pot, and proceeded to wait for it to boil.

To short cut about thirty minutes of story telling, Hero satisfied questions by saying that, indeed, the soup would be a bit better if provided a pinch of salt, some wilted vegetables, an onion, a marrow bone, some left over barley, some old bread, and so forth, carefully stirring the pot and tasting the broth after each addition. Eventually Hero declared that, to show his thanks for the use of the pot, he would gladly share the soup if person[s] had bowl[s] handy. He then served out the soup, being careful to palm the nail and make it vanish back into his pocket.

Now that we do know something about nutrition, we could round out the recipe by including some potatoes, carrots, green vegetables, some lean ground beef or chunks of soy bean curd, perhaps some spices. Depending on the needs of those eating, we could allow some oil or other fats to raise the caloric content, but no sugar.

My "Easy Health Diet" gives more detail on how to build healthful recipes and to upgrade existing ones.

One final note: when you have eaten enough, stop.

Patio Tables For All Occasions

If you love organizing spur of the moment picnics in your patio, then you need to have a set of furniture that allows you to relax and enhances the functionality of the patio at the same time. While it is easy to choose from reclining furniture and chaise lounges, it is difficult to choose from tables. There are tables for all occasions. You can choose from center tables, side tables, and dinner tables. The tables can be round, oval, octagonal or just about any shape or size that you want. When you choose a table for the patio, ensure that you choose one that matches the overall décor of the patio and even matches the size requirements. For example, you would not want to purchase a central dinner table that eats up half of the space on the patio.

Dining Tables

Dining tables are what makes that perfect family dinner possible in your patio. You need to keep several factors in mind when you choose one. The first and the most important factor is the number of people that the table can accommodate. If there are four to five members in your family, then choose a table that can accommodate 7 or eight people. You should always consider a few extra people for that picnic. Square shaped dining tables were common earlier but now, most people opt for an octagonal outdoor dining table. The reason behind this is that it allows you to maximize every inch of space. People will not bump into one another when they eat and the chairs can be spaced well. Dining tables made of wood are ideal for any setting but you can also choose one made of a cast iron frame and a glass top. Place it by the pool and it looks marvelous under patio lights.

Folding tables

If you want portability then folding tables are the best choice. Once again these come in hundreds of shapes, sizes, designs and colors. But one thing that is common across all of them is their light weight and the ease of carrying them from one place to the other. You can take it with you to the beach or even move it around to different parts of the garden. When you choose a folding picnic table, choose one that fits your budget. Plastic, wood and metal are the most common materials that are used to make folding tables.

Picnic Tables

When it comes to picnic tables, most people prefer to compromise on the look and opt for added functionality. It needs to be durable, portable and easy to store as well. This is one of the reasons why most picnic tables are made of extremely durable light cast metal alloy. Most picnic tables are folding tables and they can be folded and stored away when they are not in use. There are different varieties of the folding table. One thing that you want to consider though is that the table needs to be scratch proof as well. When you are going for a picnic, scratches on the table are the last thing that you need to be worried about.

Side tables

Side tables are the perfect addition to your recliner chair or your Adirondack rocking chair. When you recline, you can keep your things on the side table. Side tables are usually small and made to accommodate a few things only at a time. So you can rest your radio, a glass of juice or a book at the most. But small as they are, side tables can be extremely attractive. An oval cherry side table looks absolutely stunning along with other wooden furniture.

Two Legs - Stay Drunk

LYRICS: Beer and kisses Round the kitchen table I hear this is Too unstable When you're sober You're done with men And it's all over Till you're drunk again Then stay drunk If that's what it takes I'd rather be one Of your better mistakes Flowers despair And cheap alcohol Did you change your hair I haven't changed at all I know the figure in your carpet I know your figure in the sheets I figure I'm discarded And history repeats This game Again and again I got no shame When we mix love with gin There's a curtain in your room I ain't seen before Should I assume There's a few new things more But it's the same jug of wine The same cigarettes A new opening line But the same tired regrets The same But I lose my place I call your name You slap my face

One of the joys of having grandchildren is actually getting to spend quality time with them. What a better way to connect and create lasting memories than to take them with you on a vacation! But who said that holidays with kids can't be fun for the adults too? Find a destination that has balance of interactive activities with the grandkids, as well some opportunities for a little downtime for yourself, and you'll have a great time with the kids and return from your trip rested and ready to do again!

The first two destinations we recommend are in Florida. Florida has always been known as a great place to take children. The weather is fantastic, and there many great attractions for young and old alike. For example, at the Animal Kingdom Lodge in Orlando, you'll relax in one of the TWO spas and your grandchildren can play at "Uzima," the massive pool complete with an impressive 67-foot waterslide. The rooms at the Lodge are African inspired, family friendly, and disability accessible rooms are available upon request. If you decide to upgrade to the concierge level, one of the perks is the early morning "Kilimanjaro" safari that is only available to Lodge guests staying on concierge floor. ALL Lodge guests get to tour the wildlife reserve at Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park in a private guided session. Treat yourself to a "grown-up" dinner at one of the resort's restaurants while the kids (ages 4-12) enjoy a night at Simba's Clubhouse. They can play games, watch movies, and have dinner under the watchful supervision of the hotel staff. This resort also prides itself on its arcade room, massage, fitness center, and 24-hour playground!

Another perfect Florida escape can be found at Orlando's Nickelodeon Family Suites by Holiday Inn. This resort can get quite crowded during peak season which is during the summer months. If you'd like to avoid the crowds, try visiting during the fall and spring off-peak season. The wintertime can be a little cool for swimming, but it is a great time to visit the area theme parks and attractions. The Nickelodeon Hotel has one, two, and three bedroom family friendly suites complete with a full kitchen or kitchenette. They are decorated in fun colors and the kid's rooms have murals with their favorite Nickelodeon characters. The kitchen is an added benefit as eating out every day can get expensive. Kids will have tons to do with the kids' spa, two pools with water slides, arcade, and mini golf course just to name a few. The "Nick After Dark" program hosts plenty of supervised activities nightly. Another great amenity is the shuttle service that will take you to ANY of Orlando's theme parks, just be sure to make advance reservations.

On the Pacific coast you can find Hotel Del Coronado in beautiful San Diego, California. Rooms at the "Hotel Del" are in three buildings, the Victorian, Ocean Tower, and Cabana Building. Guest rooms and suites are extremely elegant and some have limited and full views of the Pacific. The Tent City Kids' Programs run through the summer. One hour craft sessions take place in the late morning and mid afternoon and run $15 per child per session. Two camps are offered each day to keep kids entertained, and there are a variety of themes like Under the Sea, Pirates of the Coronado, and Knights of the Round Table. You can extend your grandchild's stay by signing them up for "a night out". The three hour camp will run about $45 and with the extension, $65. Kayak tours, surf lessons, and beach bonfires are some of the family friendly activities hosted by the Hotel Del staff. For the adults, make an appointment at the well known salon and spa, reserve a tee time at the resort's golf course, or try one of the many high quality restaurants. Sea World and San Diego Zoo are great day trip options. The hotel offers it guests packages to both.

Our top choices for a Caribbean holiday are either of the two FDR resorts in Jamaica, FDR Pebbles in and Franklyn D. Resort. These are 2 all-inclusive resorts that cater to guests traveling with children. Complete with your own Vacation Nanny included in the price, they both offer a multitude of activities for children of all ages. The beaches at the resort are absolutely gorgeous, and some of the one, two and three bedroom suites are ocean front. There is snorkeling, kayaking, and many other family friendly activities for you to choose from. The resort offers day trips to Ocho Rios, Dunn's River Falls, and horseback riding. These are reasonably priced and a spectacular choice if you feel like getting off the resort property. We can't say enough about the Vacation Nanny! These women will befriend your grandchildren and take them to activities as much or as little as you like. They'll watch them by the pool, get them lunch, and make sure they're clean and tucked into bed at the right time. While the kids are off doing fun crafts or going to the beach, schedule a massage or manicure at the spa, lay out by the pool, or just relax on the hammock outside your room. The opportunities are endless! You and your grandkids just won't want to come home!

When taking a vacation, pack up the kids and bring them along! These resorts are completely family friendly and will be fun for your grandkids...AND YOU! Spend the quality time with them you crave, while not completely giving up your relaxing vacation.

Home Decorating Ideas For A Small Dining Room

A spacious dining room was considered a necessity in older homes. However, today our homes seem to be more compact and the emphasis has moved toward allotting more space for the family room as well as other activity specific areas. The amount of space devoted entirely to eating is shrinking. Meet the challenge of making sure that your eating space is functional and attractive no matter what size it is which will in turn keep your family happy and healthy.

Evaluate where you eat now and see if there are ways to improve it. Is the seating comfortable? Does the table fit the area and is it the right type of table for your needs? Space-saving tables include drop-leaf tables that fold down when not in use. You may be able to get by with a smaller table if you have a nearby surface from which to serve food. Round tables will generally provide room for more people in less space than other shaped tables.

A slim table in a living room may offer an ideal place for a meal. A comfortable settee for two people which is part of the regular seating of the room can be used for seating as well as a couple of living room chairs pulled up to the other side of the table. You instantly have a dining place for four people that is attractive and functional.

When shopping for a dining table, consider the shape of the table. Square and round tables are more equal in width and length. Rectangular tables are longer in length than width. Round and square tables fit most anywhere. Rectangular tables fit very nicely against a wall which allows for better "traffic flow" in the area.

Dress up the dining room table with pretty table linens. If you own a beautiful table, then show it off! If your dining table is unattractive, cover it with a beautiful damask or linen tablecloth and no one will know how it looks underneath.

When you entertain guests, remember that 90% of the success of a meal lies in its presentation. Keep that in mind when selecting the table linens, napkins, plates, flatware, and serving dishes as well as the favorite food dishes you are going to serve.

Formal table setting are always appropriate but not necessary. You can set an eye-catching table and still stay within your budget. One decorating idea is to collect glasses in one color theme combining antique styles with modern styles to unify the look. They will look great in a dining room of any size.

Planning a Vegetable Garden

It is important when you start to plan a garden, to know what you want the garden to do.
For instance, if you are hoping to feed a family of four all year round, you will need to plan a garden that is approximately 100 square meters of space (not including
walking paths) that produces more than once. If you live in a cold climate, you will not be able to grow year round. So asking yourself a few basic questions is a good way to start.

Where do you Live?

Climate can be broken down into three basic categories when planning a garden. Cold, temperate and tropical/sub-tropical.
Of course there are many shades of climate in these categories and only you can determine exactly how where you live, fits into the mix.

What will grow Where?

Different plants have different requirements so take that into consideration when doing your vegetable garden planning.

Plants like beans, broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, cauliflower, turnips, onions and peas grow best at temperatures between 10-20C. These plants prefer a cooler time of the year to grow
and will usually tolerate frost.

Vegetables like cabbage, carrots, radish, parsnip, leek, lettuce and celery have intermediate temperature requirements. They will grow best in temperatures between 15-25C and they can be fussy. Grow them out of season and they may run to seed without producing anything for your
kitchen table.

Warm season vegetables grow best in temperatures above 20C and will die if exposed to frost. These include corn, capsicum, potato, tomato, eggplant and beans and all the vine crops. So
make sure the majority of their growing season is in the warmer months.

To help with your planning, I've developed a range of sowing guides (www.no-dig-vegetablegarden.com/sowing-guides.html).
The guides indicate which months are the best for sowing popular vegetables and how many weeks growing you
have before harvest.

A few other considerations...

Protect your plants from harsh winds. Cold winds will stunt growth, hot winds will dry the soil and harm the plants, strong winds will make them break. If you don't have a natural sunny
protected corner in your garden, prepare a windbreak of garden lattice or slatted timber.

Make sure your vegetable garden gets plenty of sunshine...at least 5 hours a day of direct sunlight.

Make sure your taller plants don't block the sunlight for the smaller plants. Consider planting your garden rows in a north to south aspect so all rows receive equal amounts of sun during the day.

If you are planning to plant successive crops, rotate where you plant what. Different plants take different things out of the garden soil. This will also reduce the potential for a particular type of pest or disease to take hold in your garden. Keep replenishing your compost and mulch!

Water, water, water, water, water! Vegetables need water to grow and lots of it. A drip water system is best to give the plants a good, deep soaking and to discourage leaf fungus. This will encourage root growth. Do NOT let your garden bed dry out. Your no dig garden will have good drainage anyway, so keep it wet and top it up with mulch to keep the moisture in.

Vegetable plants should grow quickly to produce well. Water, sunshine and fertilizer all have a role. If your plants aren't sprinting ahead, then they are lacking something and your results will be disappointing. Find out what it is and fix it.

By following these simple vegetable gardening tips, your no dig garden will be off to a flying start. Spend some time to work out what you will grow over the growing season that you have available to you. Then back time the weeks you will need to grow your seedling before planting.

If you were to randomly ask ten people what a "hutch" is, they would almost answer universally that it is a big wooden cabinet that sits in a dining room with dishes in it. Little if any thought would be given to the possibility that it could be a big wooden cabinet that sits in a kitchen. The funny thing is that the average kitchen is full of big furniture items. The stove, refrigerator, freezer, kitchen table and in some instances even the washer and dryer are all in the kitchen. The problem is that other than the kitchen table and chairs, most people don't envision a big piece of wood furniture in a kitchen.

Utilitarian in purpose, what better place than the kitchen for a cabinet that displays dishes and glasses, holds silverware, linens, special use utensils and cooking gadgets? Wood always lends warmth to kitchen décor and nothing could be warmer than a stately wooden hutch lining a wall in a kitchen.

There are a variety of hutch styles that would complement almost any kitchen design. From modern and contemporary to traditional or even antique finishes, the possibilities are endless. Furniture is an expression of you; a signature of sorts and it should always complement rather than detract. Obviously a huge ostentatious wooden cabinet carelessly stationed in the middle of the floor would be more of an eyesore than an accent, however, a smaller well-crafted cabinet scaled to fit the room can add just the right touch to an otherwise ordinary room.

Like bookcases, hutches come in open and closed-in styles. Before making your purchase, consider what you will use it for. If you are a collector of knickknacks or other collectibles the open style is more suitable as a display venue. Cookbook collections, small vintage utensils and photographs could find cozy homes in one of the closed-in models. They can be as ornate or as simplistic as your lifestyle. An antique one makes a great topic for folkloric stories about its origin and previous owners. It can become home to a lonely plant or a stand for a small television or kitchen stereo system.

The best thing about them is that they do not have to match anything. The front does not compete with the aluminum or porcelain veneers of the appliances. The door or drawer pulls can as simple as round knob or as exquisite as an ornately decorated brass ring.

When you really start looking about and see the variety out there, you may think there are too many choices for you to make a decision and stick to it. Don't worry; the furniture will speak to you. Keep looking around; note all the benefits or cons of each piece of each of the hutches you look at and you will eventually know which one should come to your home.

Other than taking placement measurements, not a great deal of thought needs to go into deciding what to look for in a hutch. More likely than not you will find just the right one and make it a part of your kitchen décor.

Finding the Perfect Dining Table

Dinner is one of the only times that a family gets to spend together these days. With parents off at work and children always away with friends, it sometimes seems like there's never a moment for quality family time. That's why when the entire crew comes together, it's important that they gather around a dining table that suits everyone's needs. There are a number of characteristics that make your dining table yours, including aesthetics, structure, and material composition. All of these come together to make the perfect place for your family to lay their plates. You'll likely keep this piece of furniture longer than every other, so take the time to pick a table that will last.

Like most other furniture purchases, the easiest way to narrow down your list of options is by size. How many people do you have in your family, and how often do you all eat together. Luckily, there's a handy solution if that number varies from day to day. Perhaps your children have moved out of the house, and only come in once a week for Sunday dinner. In this case, during the workweek, you can have a small table that won't take up much room in the kitchen, leaving valuable space for cooking. For that one special night, however, you can turn that small table into an option capable of providing your entire family with a place to eat. It's not magic. Instead, you'll be making use of your table's leaves. Simply pull the table apart, and a space will appear. Insert the leaves, and suddenly you have a larger table capable of seating more hungry people.

Now that you've got size figured out, it's time to decide what form you like most. Though rectangular dining tables are by far the most popular, you may prefer a circular design. Owners of this kind of table swear by the ease of maintaining a conversation between large groups. If you're buying a large table, however, the purpose will probably be defeated. You can, however, save the day by purchasing a round table that can handle the addition of eaves to create a "racetrack" shape.

Once you've got size and form down, it's time to move on to style. Fit the dining table to the room it will be placed in. Are the other furnishings contemporary or traditional? An antique wood dining table will look silly in a kitchen devoted to more modern taste. Almost all traditional tables are made of wood, while contemporary tables can utilize glass or even metal. Put some time into thinking about what the table will be used for. If you envision your young children scraping the surface with a butter knife, glass might be the best way to go. You can always refinish a wooden table, but this process is quite expensive.

Choose the table that best represents your family. If you keep that fact in mind, you're sure to walk out of the store with a dining table that will last generations.

Round shapes add instant softness to your décor. Pillows, chairs, coffee tables, area rugs and footstools come in round shapes and can be easily added to the more angular lines of modern decorating as well as any other décor you fancy.

Lights & Lamps: A central light in each room as an appropriately decorative round chandelier creates a softer look, especially if the lights are made to dim at different settings. Rounded lamps give geometrical diversity to square end tables and look just as good sitting on rounded tables.

Coffee Tables: Coffee tables come in a wide range of sizes and shapes. You can choose from cane, wood or metal frames that twist and turn in interesting ways. Spools, spindles, elaborate curves in wood or metal... There truly is no end to what can be done to "round" to bring it into modern design. Glass for coffee table tops can be clear or tinted. Commissioning someone to tint a tabletop for you is a great idea if you wish to match the tint to the colors in your décor.

Mirrors: A large, rounded mirror placed in a strategic place adds a round reflection and softens the room's appearance with a great success. Place a rounded mirror opposite a large window with a fantastic view to bring the beautiful outdoors into your home.

Area Rugs: Round area rugs are another good way to soften the look of your home. A large round rug as an "island" for your furniture is great for adding softness in one big sweep. You might scatter a few smaller rugs in traffic areas or another large one in the center of a spacey kitchen. You can buy round area rugs in your choice of several types of materials, patterns and colors.

Footstools: Rounded footstools and chairs soften instantly, especially when the colors are kept warm and light. Round throw pillows tossed on couches and chairs have the same effect. Choose from several design prints and textures to further customize them to your design theme.

Other Tips for Rounding Out Your Design Soften angular frames with fabric decorated in round prints. Create a round backdrop for pictures on your wall. With careful measuring, tracing and painting, a circle painted in a lighter color than the rest of the wall and then filled with hanging pictures is a great way to get creative and soften at the same time. You might choose to have a mural painted in your circle or fill it with round frames.

LED Home Lighting - A Buyer's Guide

Whether you are just intrigued by the new LED home lighting products appearing in many stores, or are keen to contribute in the fight against climate change (global warming) or simply want to save money on your fuel bills, the fact is that LED home lighting is the future.

So sooner rather than later, you're going to have to learn what this future means to you personally and how you can in fact benefit considerably from new low power consumption domestic LED lighting.

This article aims to dispel some of the confusion that surrounds the many lighting solutions currently available to consumers and provide a useful guide to evaluating and buying LED home lighting.

Where should you use LED lighting in your home? The nature of LED lamps is that they emit is directional light - focused on a single area. So they are a superb choice for lighting applications that have similar characteristics, such as:

spot lights
accent lighting
tracks and clusters
recessed down lights
security lighting
courtesy lights
desk lamps
decorative & feature lighting

Many homes have this kind of lighting in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and basements - anywhere that needs to be brightly lit.

LED units also function well in strips, so under kitchen units and inside cupboards are ideal - also they give off almost no heat, plus the extremely bright light is needed in a fairly confined area rather than spread widely.

What LED lights are presently less adept at is all round illumination - from say a table lamp with a lamp shade.

Key point one: keep to what LED home lighting currently does best - bright directional lighting.

Something that confuses many people about LED lights is "color". This is not color as in green and orange - it is "white color". LED lamps come in a variety of "white colors" - from soft, warm illumination to a sharper, colder effect.

As a rough guide, "warm white" LED lights work best indoors while "cool white" is a good choice for outdoor LED lighting where you typically want sharper definition and illumination that approximates daylight.

Key point two: understand the LED light "color" scale.

Next, we get to input power ratings or wattage. We are used to knowing that 100w is bright while 40w is suitable a lounge maybe and 10w is essentially a courtesy light. But home LED lighting doesn't conform to this scale for the simple reason that LED light bulbs require very low power consumption since nearly all their input power is converted to light and almost no energy is wasted as heat.

To replace a 50w halogen lamp (both MR16 and GU10 fittings are widely available for LED equivalent replacements) you would be looking at an LED spot light rated at 7w. Step up to a 12w LED and you're taking on a regular floodlight.

There is a further complication to consider. The LED "color" affects how bright it actually appears to human eyes - cool colors seem sharper and apparently brighter than warm colors. Mentally adjust the wattage equivalent up or down a fraction according to the LED color.

Key point three: LED lights are very low energy units, so get used to a much lower wattage scale.

In addition to color and wattage, the angle of the light beam from an LED lamp has a major effect on how it looks and how bright it appears.

A narrow angle of less than 40 degrees will focus all of its light onto a small area which will therefore appear very bright. A wider angle of 70 to 120 degrees will cast light over a wider area and thus more will be illuminated but less brightly.

Key point four: take into account the beam angle of any LED lamp.

Finally, where to buy LED home lighting? If you are new to domestic LED lighting then the answer is: wherever you can actually see the LED light unit or at least a good photograph so you can assess how a particular LED application will appear in your own home before you buy it.

Specialist lighting shops often have displays you can look at (and also catalogues with photographs), and many big DIY and general stores now include LED units in their display lighting.

Unlike conventional light bulbs, LED home lighting is a long term investment which will save you a lot of money in the decades to come but the costs are all upfront, since most LED lights actually cost less to run than to purchase. They last for a very, very long time so you do not want to make a hasty purchase you could be stuck with for many years.

As ever, quality and reputation are factors to consider closely. An LED product from a recognised manufacturer that has a reasonable amount of information on the packaging is likely to prove a reliable product that performs as you would expect - whereas a cheap no-name LED unit on eBay is probably not.

That said, buying LED home lighting online is cost effective and perfectly safe once you have decided which particular types of LED lamps suit you and you are careful to buy from reputable web sites that offer warranties.

Key point five: quality and reputation count most; buy from established, reputable suppliers.

There is a no better time than during these strained economic times to consider handcrafting wooden games, toys or furniture for your family or as gifts. Recall a simpler time when we were young and created our own amusements by using our imaginations and hands to transform simple objects into playful implements or games. Gosh, I still have and use some of the things we made with our Dad in his basement workshop or garage back in Cape Breton - a periscope, wooden toolbox, marble board game. At 15 years I built that water wheel and the well replica for our garden. Mom and Dad loved it.

Consider the pleasure and sense of pride you will have when you create a gift from your own hands. And think of the pleasure you will bring to someone special. Someone for whom you took the time to craft a special wooden piece.

With a few simple hand tools and maybe a basic power tool, you can transform those ideas in your head to some very unique woodworking projects. With a little planing you could build these wooden creations right in your apartment, at your kitchen table or in your garage or basement. Covering your work area with some plastic drop-sheets or a tarpaulin and having a vacuum for cleanup opens up the possibilities of using your kitchen or dining room table for small woodworking projects.

Planning and measuring:

- On a piece of paper design your project (rough picture) and then measure it out on a rough piece of wood so you can get some kind of visual of how it will look

or

- buy a template plan that simply has you tape together the pieces of paper, lay it out on the board and simply mark then cut or drill as indicated. This is a simple way to ensure project accuracy and repeatability when you are making more than one of the same project.

Cutting the wood:

- Cut with handsaw, circular saw, table saw or miter saw

or

- Have them cut it to size at your building supply store. For a few extra dollars I have Home Depot cut my plywood to project size. Now I don't have to get out the table saw and deal with the sawdust clean-up that results.

Rounding corners and edges:

- Use a jigsaw and router

or

- With a straightedge or paper template, mark and trim the four corners with a handsaw or hand jigsaw and then, with a block and pieces of sand paper (coarse grit), round and shape the corners and edges

Drilling Holes:

- use a drill and wood bits (a drill is likely the first hand power tool you will buy)
No real alternative for a good drill and bits

Fastening the pieces together:

- No Nails Glue (This stuff seems to hold anything to anything!) - may require some clamps or weights to keep your project together during the 24 hour drying period

- Screws with wood glue (using the drill to pre-drill holes to avoid wood splitting and the screw bits to easily sink the screws)

- A small square will help ensure your corners remain square during assembly

Finishing the surface:

- poly fill or wood fill or wooden plugs will be need to cover the countersunk screws

- You will need coarse to fine sandpaper. Coarse sandpaper to deal with smoothing the edges and finer sandpaper to finish the surfaces in preparation for a wood finish to be applied.

- Go with natural wood finishes like polyurethane, lacquers and wood oils. Let the natural wood grains display all their splendor.

- Stain and paint first. Then finish with a polyurethane to make the surface more durable

You can be a talented woodworking carpenter with a few simple tools:

- measuring tape and pencil

- straightedge and/or square

- handsaw

- hand jigsaw

- power drill, drill bits and screw bits (this is the first power tool you should own) OR a versatile Dremel, which has a wide variety of attachments

- sand paper block (a piece of 2x2 or 2x3 wood) and sandpaper

- good quality paint brushes (clean and spin dry after each use and they will last for years)

Now, more than ever, is the time to unleash your woodworking talent and handcraft wooden treasures like toys, games and furniture. In the land of wooden handcrafts the recipients smile is the true gift of receiving.

Square Meals on a Square Table

A square dining table is a lot more edgy than a conventional round design. Although the number of seats could only accommodate even-numbered diners, the design is nonetheless captivating and modern. Customers can opt for environmental-friendly pieces that are made of rattan and bamboos. If the customers are worried about the exorbitant price of natural resources, the synthetic version is cheaper and easily portable.

A customer who is looking to decorate the hall with chic furniture can choose a sleek glass board for the piece and tuxedo chairs. These are the latest trends in home décor. Quadrangle boards can be creatively arranged together with upholstered chairs because the shape of the boards requires all four legs, whereby round ones has only one centered leg.

Beautiful accessories can be embedded into the decoration of the kitchen to empower the concept that you are searching for. For instance, a matching cabinet or butcher block can enhance the shape of the board. Ebony chairs are a great to go with quadrangle shapes, and this set can also be placed in the garden for a nice view of the stars while having dinner.

Quadrangle shapes make a perfect breakfast set which usually is a two-seater. The breakfast furniture can be place nearer to the kitchen counter because it is easier to cook and serve quickly as people are usually in a hectic mood in the morning.

Other than that, quadrangle shapes must be softened by a linen cover. Whether embroidered, hand-stitched or printed, the covers would look not only good plus it would act as a protective gear for the board. The best textiles for the board can either be cotton, linen or polyester, depending on the type of board. Striped printed fabric provides a country feel. A plain cloth can be used on all types of boards and it is compatible on any surface and it gives a simplistic outlook.

Be it the area of ensemble or the home décor - fashion is born only to be replaced by the next round of innovations. The trends in the bar stools also keep on changing every year, every season. The style options also keep on expanding keeping with the latest trends.

The influencing factors behind the contemporary bar stool designs

The trend in furniture designing is hugely dictated by the changing use of the particular furniture. So far bar stools are concerned, they are no longer restricted to the four walls of bars. Today they are used as multi-purpose furniture and you can find them in the kitchen areas as well as in the out door parties.

Distinctive features of contemporary bar stools

The latest trends in the design of the contemporary tools highlight two dominant features: artistic details and a conscious effort to bring a retro look. The retro effect has become popular with American's growing penchant for the outdoor living and outdoor partying.
The contemporary bar stools emphasize on the 'space age' designs. In most of the cases the contemporary bar stool designs involve metal legs or stands and metal frames. The metallic frames are designed as an integrated framework to support the seat, seatback, and footrests. Because of this unique one-frame structure, the contemporary bar stools appear to be sleek and simple and easy on your eyes.
Forget those traditional barstools with tall seatbacks-the contemporary bar stools are characterized by their short seatbacks that look like just an extension of the seat itself. In many cases the seatbacks are not more than only a few inches above the back of the seat. Some designers even try to curve it out from one piece and the stool looks like as if it has a seat that extends into a seat back. As opposed to the boring rectangular seat backs, today's bar stool seat backs are designed in the shape of solid half ellipses or circles.
The seats are also being designed to make bold design statement- in most of the cases seats are round with fabric or vinyl covers. Simplicity is what rules the design of the seats-this rightly complements the stylized legs in these contemporary stools.
The sitting comfort and right posture are two guiding factors in the contemporary bar stool designing-the stools are being designed with an aim of providing maximum seating comforts to the individual users. It is founded on the idea that every individual defines comfort differently and each person should be able to adjust their sitting arrangements according to their individual needs. As such stools are being made with features such as adjustable heights, good lumbar support, and feature that support the stools to tilt front to back.
Contemporary bar stools reveal bold experiments with the forms and functions-seatbacks with sidebars often extend below the seat to serve the double purpose of a footrest. The use of such versatile metals as stainless steel, aluminum, or chrome-that can be bent in several ways-make this type of design experiments possible.

An overwhelming selection of contemporary bar stools await you in the internet-choose the ones that keep with your taste and start entertaining your guests with style.

How to Use an Elliptical Trainer

Elliptical trainers have boomed in popularity and in the cardio machine stakes, they are now as popular as treadmills. This article explains what elliptical trainers are, their benefits and some tips on how to use them effectively.

Elliptical trainers have two large, flat foot pedals and when you use them your feet follow an elongated oval shape known as an ellipse. The movement feels like a mix between fast walking, stair climbing and cross-country skiing. If you're looking to lose weight, elliptical trainers provide a quiet, low impact and challenging way to lose weight. Some machines allow you to work your arms at the same time and burn additional calories.

All machines usually have a display that shows the amount of time you have been riding, the number of calories burned and how far you have ridden. Because of this you can easily track your progress during your workout and over time.

Another advantage of elliptical trainers is that you get a full body workout and can watch TV, listen to music, or even read at the same time! The fact that your whole body is involved also makes it less likely that you will get bored or experience discomfort.

If you want a day off from running or find stair climbing hard on your knees, the elliptical trainer might be just what you need. This machine is also a good choice for gentle prenatal workouts. Be aware, though, that some people find the elliptical motion unnatural.

Because of the unnatural motion, an elliptical trainer can take some getting used to. It doesn't require any great skill, though. So, by carefully following these tips you should get used to it pretty quickly:

* Don't pedal backwards too much. Many people think that pedaling backwards works your buttocks more than pedaling forwards but this is not the case. You might also find it is hard on your knees too. Both forward and backward motions exercise your front thigh muscles, so do some backward pedaling every now and again but no for long periods.

* Vary the intensity of your workout. Elliptical trainers have some handy features. You can vary the intensity of your workout by pedaling quicker, raising the incline, increasing the resistance or by using any combination of these three features.

* Keep the motion smooth. Resist any temptation to lock your knees. Keep them slightly bent and try to maintain a smooth flowing action.

* Stand up straight. Elliptical trainers do encourage better posture than say, stair-climbers but you can still find yourself leaning too far forward and clinging to the console. So, remind yourself to stand up straight.

Elliptical trainers can feel unnatural, particularly those that work your arms too. However, by following the advice in this article you can enjoy a gentle or more challenging workout that is safe and provides a change from the treadmill or stair-climber.

Use an elliptical trainer regularly and learn to enjoy using it by listening to music, watching TV, or whatever. In other words, make it something you look forward to every day. You'll be rewarded with better muscle tone, less body fat and will have a greater sense of well being.

Have you recently given your patio a complete makeover with some quality outdoor furniture? Yet, you feel that something is missing. Many a times, it happens that you make a dish with a perfect recipe but miss out on a small but vital ingredient that is so crucial to give it the taste that it deserves. That is precisely what a side table is. It is small but so vital to give your outdoor furniture the complete picture perfect appearance that it deserves. The side table is a much overlooked piece of furniture. It can be used to simply hold a bottle of suntan while you are relaxing by the pool. Or it can be used to keep the radio on it while you are busy reading on your Adirondack. Now if you do not have a side table, then you would have to either keep them down on the ground or somewhere close by. Either ways, it will cause you to move from your relaxing position and then get the stuff that you need. And that is the last thing that you need when you are relaxing. So do yourself a favor and get a side table.

Buying side tables

Alright, so you have made the right decision and decided to buy a side table. Now let us go to the next step. Which side table should you buy? Traditionally, side tables have always been square and small. This was to enable anyone to reach out and take what they wanted from the table top. But now they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. You have round, square, octagon and rectangular ones as well. They are crafted from the best quality wood as well as synthetic environment friendly materials. Most people choose a side table that matches the rest of their outdoor décor. If the rest of the furniture is made of wood, then wood is the most obvious choice. On the other hand, if the rest of the furniture is a mix of all kinds of materials, then you can experiment. A nice round accent table with a metal frame or a wooden frame and a glass top should be perfect for just about any outdoor setting. If wood is what you are looking for then an oval cherry side table should suffice. It looks extremely good and is durable as well. Metal side tables are usually not as preferred as some of the other materials are.

The look

When it comes to the look, there is once again a lot to choose from. The contemporary side table is a great compliment to other contemporary looking furniture. Like most contemporary furniture, the table has flowing details and unique shapes. It might have a glass top or a wooden top and depending on the material might have a diamond or a rhombus shape. And if you want to experiment with the look, then you can always opt for a modern side table. These come in a variety of shapes and sizes and often resemble modern art in their workmanship. You can always opt for a simple adjustable side table that serves its purpose.

Eventually it all comes down to personal preferences and choice. If you can afford it, you can choose a side table that costs as much as $500. On the other hand, a simple looking plastic one should also work fine if you are on a budget. No matter what kind of side table you are looking to buy, you will always get some great options online. Make sure that you search around till you find the best price and quality.

Cottage Style Decorating - A Cottage by the Lake

Have you ever spent your vacation at a cottage by a lake? If so, you know the relaxing and comforting feeling of spending time in a beautiful setting. The following is a reflection of the fond memories I have of spending a couple of weeks each summer at a Minnesota lake cottage.

What did I like about that cottage? I liked the simple casual décor which was a mixture of hand-me-downs and antiques that had been in the cottage for years. I liked the rustic feel of the paneling in the living room which had outlived its popularity.

The living room was a mixture of furniture including an antiqued open-shelf cabinet, a small rocking chair, and a heavy steel-framed couch. There was also a small, round antique ice cream table with two chairs. Colorful pillows added a nice touch to the cottage style decorating.

The kitchen had been somewhat modernized but still required hand washing dishes and getting ice cubes out of a tray! Another family member had “antiqued” the kitchen table using red paint and had also added red and white checked curtains and tablecloth to match. The table was a sturdy, square wooden table that was very durable. The kitchen also had a white wooden open -shelved cabinet which displayed collectibles and drawers which stored linens.

The bedroom had an antique dresser and chest as well as two double bunk beds. An oval braided rug completed the cottage look of the bedroom.

The secret to cottage style decorating is keeping it casual and having a feeling of friendly comfort as the goal. This feeling of comfort and relaxation was certainly evident in the “cottage by the lake.” There was no sentiment of pretense or make-believe as the cottage was “what you see is what you get.” For that reason it was a peaceful refuge from the hectic routine of life; a place to unwind, slow down and regroup until the next summer vacation.

For people who love to entertain on the water, the pontoon boat is a perfect boating choice. Pontoon boats, also know as “Party boats,” are made of a hull constructed of round tubes that are attached to a large flat deck. Safety railing on all sides surrounds the deck of the pontoon boat. Generally speaking, pontoon boats can hold six to twelve people but higher end pontoon boats can carry more.

It must be noted that pontoon boats are best for calm lakes and other quiet bodies of water. Pontoon boats should not be exposed to waves over two feet high. The ocean and larger lakes put both the boat and passengers on the pontoon in danger.

The basic pontoon boat can be furnished with lawn furniture for seating and eating. However, deluxe pontoon boats can come equipped with built in and upholstered seating, dinette tables, roofs and even a bathroom. The level of amenities on your pontoon boat is only limited by your budget.

These boats are great to use as party barges. You can put a canopy over the deck of your pontoon boat to protect your guests from the sun. Pontoon boats are perfect to use to take your friends and family out for an afternoon cruise. They also make stable platforms for fishing. Owning a pontoon boat can guarantee hours of fun and blissful water time in your future.

Pontoon boats are normally between 16 and 22 feet in length. They can be used with a trailer, but a special pontoon boat trailer is needed to transport them. Pontoon boats range in price between $8,500 and $30,000 for newer models. Used pontoon boats can be found between $1,500 and $15,000. If you are considering a used pontoon boat, be sure to thoroughly inspect the boat for damage or potential problems before you buy.

Is Growing Sprouts the Answer For You?

Most people have had a sandwich with alfalfa sprouts on it at one time or another, or mung sprouts in a plate of Chinese chow mien. However, more and more individuals are starting to become aware of the power of these superfoods not just as an addition to something else, but as an amazing meal in and of themselves. Growing sprouts yourself takes this to a whole other level, for the convenience (if you grow them the right way), low cost and having access to the freshest food grown right in your kitchen.

Sprouts (seeds or grains that have been germinated and have started to grow) are considered by many to be "superfoods," containing high amounts of digestive enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids not present in the unsprouted seeds. The list of health benefits can go on for pages, but perhaps the most simple and important feature of these living superfoods is that the process itself gives you total control over their cultivation. No hidden pesticides, chemical fertilizers or anything else but the water from your own sink. In a time when we can never really be sure what has happened to the food we eat before reaching our table, the importance of such a method cannot be overstated.

Additionally, growing sprouts can be done in a lot of places where vegetables cannot be either grown or transported to, while in a fresh enough state to deliver health benefits. Even if you lived on a boat, or in a climate that was either too hot or too cold to have a garden, you can still have access to fresh, live sprouted vegetables when you learn the basics of sprouting. And also, unlike most vegetables, even if you live in a place where they are available, sprouts are never out of season.

The health benefits cannot be overlooked. The human body needs oxygen rich vegetables and living foods to thrive. As wonderful as these foods are, there are climates where it is unrealistic to expect people to be able to cultivate them. In extremely cold or hot climates, the only option to have fresh food that does not have to travel hundreds (or thousands) of miles to its destination is to create an indoor greenhouse. Extremely cold environments would require an indoor heated greenhouse that is extremely expensive and complicated to maintain. On the other end of the spectrum, high desert environments are usually low on water, and to use hundreds of gallons of water over a growing season when most of it evaporates is unsustainable. Even in areas that are perfect for growing large amounts of fresh vegetables, year round growing is not possible.

The answer to all these questions is growing sprouts. You use a jar or similar device to create a greenhouse (or several greenhouses) that fit on your kitchen counter, supplying you and your family with fresh, oxygen and enzyme rich foods, any time of year. There is also some innovative new ways of growing sprouts that use far less water, time and effort than jars and requires no daily rinsing, which is perfect for people with busy lifestyles who still want to enjoy the health benefits of sprouts.

It's fun thinking about a patio for your outdoor living area. You might be imagining entertaining your family and friends. Perhaps relaxing quietly enjoying the peace and quiet is a nice thought or even listening to some trickling water.

However, there are many design aspects to consider.

1. How large do you need your patio to be? Is it just a small sitting area for two, or do you need the space to entertain large groups of people? As a guide, a sixty inch round table and chairs would need about fifteen feet of space. This allows for chairs to be maneuvered and also allows for access around the furniture. A lounge needs approximately ten feet of space. A patio which is fifteen feet by twenty feet or about 300 square feet is decent size.

2. Work with a design that looks well with the architecture of your home. Sometimes the simplicity of interesting geometric shapes and paving patterns look elegant. In other situations, curvilinear designs look beautiful and might blend in well with natural surroundings.

3. What about paving materials? Are you looking for an inexpensive solution? Colored concrete works nicely. I suggested this for a client on a budget and they loved it. I designed the concrete so that it was patterned with large squares for interest. Do you have your heart set on natural stone? Travertine pavers are becoming popular. They are actual stone but are cut into regular shapes for an easy, dry laid installation. Bluestone is always beautiful whether it be laid in mortar or dry laid. You can choose from irregular or regular shapes.

4. How high above the ground is your door to the house? If there is a four inch to eight inch difference, you can plan on just stepping onto the patio. However, if your doorway is higher, some creative design work must be done. Many times I will create a nice sized landing to step onto. From this, a few steps are provided down to the patio. This provides a comfortable area to step onto, rather than just a narrow step. If your door is very high, you can also add some steps off the patio. The ideas is to create a gradual transition to ground level.

5. Seat walls are a nice addition to patios. They not only provide something attractive and vertical to look at, but also additional seating and a nice place for conversation. Seat walls should be eighteen to twenty four inches high and a minimum of one foot deep. The top of the wall should be flat. For example, if the seat wall is to be made of natural stone, a bluestone cap provides a comfortable seat and also a resting place for food or drinks.

6. Think about some nice features to add to your patio. The sound of water from a natural or formal pond at the edge or nearby is both beautiful and peaceful. Perhaps a special sculpture works well in the design. If your patio is in a hot and sunny area, consider a pergola or trellis for shade.
You might even include a simple bird bath fountain.

Considering all of these design elements will lead to a patio project that is aesthetic, functional and enjoyable.

Your dining table is the focus of all your activity in the kitchen, therefore getting the best out of your dining experience here should be top of your priority list!

Getting right tableware for your needs and aspirations is an essential element in hosting memorable dinner parties and for everyday dining. By selecting the correct tableware it is possible to have the perfect dinner set for both formal and informal situations - and a must if you want to impress your friends or your family with the style and efficiency of your kitchen. It is always important to remember that serving and presentation will enhance all your preparation and cooking effort.

The term tableware covers a multitude of different items and implements - which are never all to be found in one department in a store or online web site. Yours has to function for; everyday use, dinner parties, as well as seasons, occasions and events, so it is wise to constantly update your battle plan and weaponry! I find that by looking at the three functions of the dining experience, it is useful to then devise your approach to buying your tableware either in totally new sets or just updating it.

1] For the Look and Style -The Backdrop:

Tablecloths, placemats, napkins, table runners, napkin rings, table runners, coasters, candlestick holders and vases.

2] For serving, 'Serveware':

Serving plates, serving dishes, serving bowls, wine decanters, serving cutlery, trivets, trays, sauce boats, cheese boards, butter dishes, salt & pepper dispensers.

3] For Eating and Drinking:

Cutlery, plates, bowls, glassware, cups & saucers.

Your choice of tablewear will depend on style and fashion as much as practicality, however it is as always best to get the best quality you can afford, from your dinner service plates to your cheeseboard. When buying pieces of dinnerware, always check for tiny cracks, bubbles in the glaze, and the makers mark on the back. Also check for microwave and dishwasher usability.

It is wise to have your main sets of plates, cups and cutlery sets in classic style and plain colour, and ask yourself whether it is to be used every day or for special occasions and budget accordingly, white plates are easy to replace! This core range can be built upon.

Tips For Success;

- Think about colour, theme and style, if your main table wear sets are classic you can have seasonal sets - fresh colours for spring and summer with bamboo servers, and wooden slat table runners. Deeper colours for autumn and winter, when you bring out the candles.

- Attention to detail; now all tablewear is an art form - even trivets!

- Serving food style can be infinitely varied, a rustic meal can look better presented in stonewear straight from the oven, and formal meals served on specially selected serverys.

- Have fun and be varied with your presentation - top Italian brands use funky materials and confident colour combined with quality. Paper serviettes come in a range of colourful designs which can bring a touch of art to dining and can be equally as effective as cloth napkins and stylish napkin rings.

- Consider how best to enhance the style of your dining table - wooden ones can look more stylish largely uncovered whereas some look best with a well chosen tablecloth predominant.

- Salads look best served in large bowls - wooden ones make the colours come to life.

- Have an overall cohesive theme - it sometimes looks best to have the meal served entirely on oval platters - than an eclectic mix of square and round bowls in steel, ceramic and various materials.

- Be cool about your presentation, don't clutter the table with style statements, remove that vase and flowers after the starter has been served to make space for the main act. Also allow plenty of time for your guests to appreciate your efforts.

So remember, with the array of options available in tablewear, the only limit to your success is in the planning and coordination - and your sense of style and cooking!

Sure you need someplace to set up your computer as well as keep up with your weekly correspondence with grandma. But it doesn’t have to be that plain plywood desk that everyone else has or your old standby; the kitchen table. You can do your work on something that suits your personal style and needs. Whether you’ve always dreamt of having an oversized desk like Donald Trump or a secretary full of compartments for all your writing essentials you can easily have the workspace you need with the decorative flair you want.

So get rid of the boring desk you have, clean the clutter off your kitchen table and put that old card table away. It’s time to get a writing table that will both accent your décor and fulfill all of your needs. Begin by comparing prices online and you’ll also see how many different types of writing tables and desks are out there. Then figure out how much space you have for this table as well as how large of a work surface you need. Do you want something that closes up to hide your mess while it adds beauty to your room? Or maybe you want to make a bold statement with a funky piece or marvel at your space-saving and versatile table that pulls apart to reveal a chair and writing desk. Perhaps a desk with a hutch is just what you need to hold your reference books and inspirations within reach. Once you decide on the type and size of desk you need you can look at the design.

Now you may be thinking that you don’t really need a writing table, but the great thing about them is that they can do double duty as an accent table, a console table or an entryway table. So you’ll have the workspace you need as well as plenty of display space for some fresh garden flowers or a favorite photo. You’re new writing table can be a great way to add some fun and function to your home. Choose a desk with a zebra striped top and legs with hooves. A single drawer ensures you’ll never have to go on safari for your stationary again. A steel framed desk that’s computer ready brings a modern industrial look to any room. A classic secretary with a vibrant red finish combines French style with a Far East flair.

Whatever style you fancy your writing table will give your kitchen table a break and you a place to be inspired. Traditional or contemporary it’s the workspace you need and the versatility you desire. Most often found in schools or children’s bedrooms, now you can find a writing desk that suits your adult needs and favors the fun and funkiness your inner child desires. So, don’t go to the local discount store and find something that works but is an eyesore. Shop around and find a piece of furniture that you love. Something that you’ll actually enjoy using and you won’t revert back to the kitchen table while your desk collects dust in the corner.

Oh how I wish I would have experienced "summertime on the farm!" My grandmother grew up on a 42-acre orchard farm in Bucks County, Pennsylvania complete with chickens, cows and pigs. As young children my mother and aunt would spend a few weeks there during the summer in the care of my great grandmother. This took place in the early 1940s. With the antics of six uncles the little girls were kept squealing! The boys were great at teasing and game playing. Of course the two little girls loved every minute of it! The stories I have heard over the years makes me long to go back in time. Taking a walk in the woods, picking berries out in the fields and sitting at my great grandmother's dinner table are grand images to me of "living life the old fashioned way." There was a bounty of farm fresh foods served at every meal. What I wouldn't do to taste my great grandmother's country cooking with her roasted chicken made in the old coal/wood stove or her homemade bread spread with her own churned butter and fresh raspberry jam.

For my summertime memories fast forward to the late 1960s when I was about ten. My grandmother, Elizabeth, would have us over every Wednesday for the day. We'd get there in the morning for breakfast (usually had "big pancakes" otherwise known as crepes) then we'd have a simple lunch in the afternoon. Being located in the suburbs of Philadelphia her home was not a farm but it defined itself with its warmth, mouth watering aromas wafting out of her kitchen, antique dishes and wares proudly displayed and its beautifully lush gardens. The front porch was draped with a huge wisteria vine which originated from the farm. The "roots" of our family are present here. When you entered her home it almost felt as if it wrapped itself around you with its love and comfort. That is why I cherish every memory I have of those days.

There was a second floor porch out back just off the kitchen which was surrounded by a wrought iron fence covered in grapevines. Between lunch and dinner I'd go out there and take a nap on the old white wicker cushioned sofa. It was a time for me to dream and to just enjoy being a kid with no worries. How heavenly and peaceful those naps were! As I'd drift off I'd hear my grandmother and mother chatting in the kitchen while preparing dinner. I'd wake up to the wonderful aromas of comfort foods such as pot roast or fried chicken baking in the oven and mouth watering side dishes being cooked on the stove. And of course there was always dessert! How lucky I am to have been nurtured so by my family! And how lucky to have tasted such scrumptious treats which came out of my grandmother's kitchen!

Below are two of my grandmother's simple summertime recipes which bring back memories of those days. Please try them and let me know what you think!

String Bean Salad

Prepare one pound of fresh green beans by cutting off the ends and cutting in half lengthwise. Cook in salted water (about 1/2 teaspoon salt) until done but not too soft. (About 8-10 minutes) Drain and put in a bowl. Add one tablespoon sugar, sprinkle of pepper, 1/4 cup olive oil and 1/4 cup vinegar. Finely chop one tablespoon onion, one tablespoon fresh parsley and one garlic clove. Toss all ingredients together lightly until mixed well. Serve hot or cold. This recipe is seasoned to taste.

Corn and Apple Fritters

Cut the kernels off of three ears of fresh corn. You can use frozen, but fresh is better. Sift 3/4 cup flour with 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon salt and a pinch of paprika. Add 1 egg yolk and 1/4 cup milk. Mix well. Add the corn kernels. Beat the egg white until stiff. Fold into the corn mixture. Drop carefully by tablespoon into hot oil on a medium heat. They should look flat and round about the size of a silver dollar pancake. Fry on each side until golden brown. Drain on a paper towel. These are delicious drizzled with honey!

You can use this same recipe and use 1 cup shredded apples instead of the corn. Apple fritters are yummy and are best when sprinkled with powdered sugar!
