Family Size
The first thing you need to think about is your family size. How many people are usually at the table for dinner. If on a regular night you have a family of four you know you need a table that can at least seat four. What about those special events? Perhaps you have many more people who need a place to sit then.

This can be moved when it is not needed, making it a much smaller table. When you do need it, you can expand the table. This will allow you to avoid that 'overkill' and 'oversized' feeling when there are just a few of you for dinner.

Another thing to think of is cutting some space off of the width of the table. Often people have square or round tables that take up a lot of space because the middle space is essentially a void. Most of the people who are seated cannot reach this area. Instead perhaps you should look for a table that is not as wide, where everyone can reach all the way across it and you are also opening up some more floor space for the room.

The next thing you should consider is the chairs that go with your dining table set. These should also be minimalized. Many dining chairs go to the point of overkill. They are large and bulky with fancy arms and take up a lot of space around the table. Instead, look for chairs that do the job at hand, give you a place to sit around the table. They don't need to do anything more.
Number of Tables
The final thing you may want to consider is how many dining tables you want to have in a room. While most people think you are just supposed to have one dining room table in place, the truth is you can have more. Instead of a long table that can seat a lot of people, you have the option to opt for a few smaller tables that will also provide enough room for everyone
